New House, Cambridge

We have recently completed a new house in Cambridge. The site was an extremely challenging garden plot left over after the construction of an important 1960s (listed) house, and was subject to flooding and planning restrictions.

Being very narrow between houses on the road, the plot flares out to a surprisingly broad garden which borders a 4 acre lake. The house was designed to make the most of these tight constraints with a quiet presence at the street opening up to generous views of the lake and a garden running to the water’s edge. Built from handmade 2” bricks with stone dressings and a green roof, the use of careful top lighting, a small courtyard and a high level of finish internally, the house gives the impression of a secret garden pavilion hidden behind a humble outbuilding on an ordinary street.
