Profile

We work across the UK, covering all scales of architecture from masterplanning to the design of furniture and interiors. Projects include new buildings in sensitive historic sites, and many projects involve alterations to listed buildings. Often our work extends to landscape and garden design.

We are a relatively young firm of 10-ish people but already regarded as one of the top UK architects for residential work. We won the Diaphoros Prize in the Georgian Group’s 2021 Architectural Awards and have won other awards locally and regionally. We have been included for several years in Country Life’s listings of the top 100 designers and makers, and have also featured in similar lists in House and Garden magazine.

Our projects are informed by a sensitive approach to place, and an interest in materials and the craft of construction. We share a love and thorough understanding of traditional materials and settlements; we aim for designs which are rooted in context but have a fresh and distinct identity.

We seek to achieve the highest standards of material and energy use, even when budgets are constrained. We design with flexibility and longevity in mind. We are interested in sustainability in the broadest sense.

Perhaps unusually, much of our drawing output is by hand, although we combine this with 3D computer modelling, and technical and working drawing packages are largely drawn with CAD. The Sketchbook section of this website gives some sense of the range of drawings which clients might see over the course of a project.

We value a frank working relationship with our clients. The best ideas are often the result of open creative discussion and we are committed to making the process of design and building enjoyable for all parties.

The practice is committed to providing an excellent and personal level of service at every stage. Mark Hoare or Ted Ridge are closely involved with each project, with one of them typically leading from early design through to completion. Charles Morris is nearing retirement and a consultant to the firm, but still involved in some projects.

Mark and Ted met early in their careers while working for Charles. After a number of years working separately in London, Cambridge and Suffolk, they founded the practice in October 2012.
